PlayOnLinux for Windows Games & Apps

PlayOnLinux is a piece of software which allows you to easily install and use numerous games and apps designed to run with Microsoft® Windows®. PlayOnLinux brings a cost-free, accessible and efficient solution to this problem.

Yeah, we just offered our best friend an installation of our favorite operating system, Ubuntu, and we heard it once again: “But what about my favorite games? Can I play them on Ubuntu?”. An embarrassing silence, then that long and awful series of “Uhmm.. Uhmm..” and finally the “If you want you can dual-boot Linux and blablabla..”, while the face of our friends gets suddenly much less enthusiastic about installing Ubuntu. How many times did it happen to you? To me, to be honest, it has happened many times. But (and fasten your belt), as you keep going on with this article, change has come to Ubuntu! PlayOnLinux is a very useful software, designed to let you play your favorite titles directly from your Ubuntu box, without actually having to deal with the overwhelming complexity of Wine settings and installation. PlayOnLinux supports a great number of Windows® based softwares (the list can be consulted at the developer’s website). All you have to do is to install the software and download the appropriate script to run the Windows® software you want to run on your box.

I’m quite enthusiastic about PlayOnLinux. I myself am an avid video-gamer and PlayOnLinux made my old dual-boot configuration totally useless. PlayOnLinux doesn’t, legally, require a Windows® license to run (and that saves a hundred bucks) and is able to run many titles quite smoothly.

PlayOnLinux can be installed easily following the instructions listed under "Packages" and then click Ubuntu. Use the appropriate directions for your version of Ubuntu. Copy and paste these commands into a terminal window (Applications > Terminal)...

See you soon and have fun with PlayOnLinux!
